Name Biography

In the name biography you can research the history of your last name, find out how your first name originated, or even talk about a nickname. You can even talk about how your name describes who you are. Example of a story: My Name and Me Mary Alice is my name, “Blessed Virgin,” read my hospital band. I was named after my paternal Grandma, Mary Jean, and my maternal Big Granny, Alice Katherine. But quite often my friends, relatives, and co-workers call me, “Maria,” the Spanish translation of my name. When others hear my name they ask, “Oh like the woman who killed herself on ‘Desperate Housewives,’” and I can only answer, “Well, yes.” My name is found in nursery rhymes and to this day I am asked, “Where is your little lamb?” I just say, “Ba-ba is at home,” he was my stuffed lamb when I was a baby. People even sometimes question, “How does your garden grow?” I just look at them and tell them, “I’m sorry I don’t know, a garden I do not grow.” My name, “Mary,” is also found in songs, like Kenny Chesney’s “Anything but Mine.” Carlos Santana once sang of, “Maria, Maria,” as did Brooks and Dunn. Now taking my middle name of Alice, I’m sure you are thinking of that drug induced movie created by Disney. As most do. People envision that little, blonde, British girl, chasing after that little white rabbit. Yes I am blonde, yes I lived in Wales, so I do have a slight accent, and yes like Alice, I don’t really like reading. Ever since I can remember, Mommy and Daddy have called me, “Missy.” It’s a nickname I acquired when I was only months old, because it was all I would answer to. It means, “Little girl.” Reaching only 5’2” and the shortest person in my rather large family, I stand up to the name. When other people hear Mommy call me, they think of a preppy, outgoing, fun, spirited, ponytail wearing, cheerleader. Honestly that is what I am, only pom-poms I do not have. I wouldn’t change my name at all- it applies to me in too many ways. Besides why would I change the name I won crowns under and scholarships for articles? Why change the name on my Diploma and change the name on my photographs at the LA County Fair? It means too much to me and is plastered all over on Military records, medical records, drivers license, Social Security Card, and school ID’s, as being me. Now when I get married my name WILL change but only slightly. You see, instead of Mary Alice Harrison, it will be… Mary Alice (insert future husband’s last name here.) Poem Example: You can have students write a poem about their name in any form of poetry- haiku, free verse, sonnet, it's up to you.
