Who I Am

Have students listen to the song, "Who I am," by Jessica Andrews. Then have them write a poem, short story, speech, or song about who they are. Example: A Summary of My Story I was born the distant cousin of our country’s first defender. The Granddaughter of a World War II and a Korean War Veteran. And the daughter of a United States Army Ranger. I was raised to be proper. I learned in the halls of a Georgia Church and a Welsh school, That I was to be seen not heard. I sheltered the younger members of my family from our families occasional wrath. I lost all faith in prayer, But found it a few years later. I lost my home and my dog thanks to the US Army, But they gave me more then they have ever taken. My Dad eventually gave up his shinning career for me, We got a new dog a few months later. I have been beaten. But I have always over come. I found refuge in a band room and a home in my high school. I found my voice and my confidence. I penned the storied of those I loved most. I captured their memories on film forever. No one ever asks my story and that’s ok with me. All you need to know is, I’m a beauty queen and a teacher, a dancer and singer, a band twinkie and a sorority sister, a poet and a drummer. I’m patient and I listen, I smile no matter the day. And I will always here when you need me.
